Genesis 26:22
22 Abandoning that one, Isaac moved on and dug another well. This time there was no dispute over it, so Isaac named the place Rehoboth (which means “open space”), for he said, “At last the Lord has created enough space for us to prosper in this land.” (NLT)
As portals from one world to another, it is only through wells that we have access to the resources of the unseen world under our feet. Similarly, we only have access to the blessings of the kingdom of God through spiritual wells dug by men and women of faith who dig in spite of opposition.
If we dig spiritual wells in our lives, the resources of heaven can become the sustenance of earth.
Allow me to explain what I mean by offering two examples of wells that have made the blessings of heaven available to me throughout the years…
- I did not have access to a relationship with my Heavenly Father until Jesus willingly gave His life as a sacrifice to pay for the wrong I have done. His acts of living a perfect life, dying on a cross in my stead, and raising to life on the third day has created the way for my salvation. Jesus dug a spiritual well that provides me with forgiveness and salvation everyday as He prays for me and advocates for me in heaven.
- I did not have access to the resource of self-discipline until my mom and dad faithfully administered discipline in our home throughout my childhood. Even when they were tired, discouraged, or worn thin, they made sure that all of their children experienced consequences for bad attitudes or behavior. My parents dug a spiritual well that provides me with the discipline I need to be successful in my life.
Here are some of the wells that I am currently digging for those around me today…
- As the head of my home, I dig spiritual wells through prayer, example, administration, and communication that provide my wife and children with the fear of the Lord, the presence of the Lord, a father’s guidance and attention, and the love of a marriage that is prioritized.
- In the same way, I dig spiritual wells as the Lead Pastor of my church that provide the people of our church with a vision for the future, encouragement, hope, and clarity. By God’s grace and direction, I provide my flock with resources from heaven to sustain their ministries on earth.
Have you ever experienced opposition for digging spiritual wells? Don’t give up! Move forward and dig another well. The world desperately needs access to the resources of heaven.
What wells are you digging today?
Very good message Pastor Josh! Thank you so much for sharing and for your teachings!
Thanks, Linda. I’m glad that they are helping. God bless!

Hello Chrissy, thanks for your comment. The Lord encouraged me through the story of Isaac’s troubles to find a place for him and his family to flourish in Genesis 26:12-25. His work to provide access to life-sustaining water for his family is a metaphor for our work as Christians to provide access to the life of Jesus. Jesus told the woman at the well in John 4 that He was living water. We must be an access point for others to the living water like a well is an access point to physical water. That is what I mean by digging spiritual wells. I did not mean digging a physical well. The work we do in our families to raise godly children, our testimony to our friends, the prayers we pray, the service we give to others, and our love–just to name a few–all bring the life of heaven to earth like a well allows us to draw “life” (water) from under ground and unseen sources to the earth above. If you want to hear more, you may listen to my sermon called Digging Deep. Copy and paste this into your URL bar at the top of your browser if you want to listen. https://www.topcrestline.com/sermons/2-11-18-digging-deep/?view=video Just as it says in Galatians 6:9, don’t grow weary in doing good for in due time you will reap a harvest. So to, don’t grow weary in digging these spiritual wells even if you run into opposition like Isaac did. People desperately need Jesus, the living water.
Stay bless, she’d the love of Jesus Christ abroad.
More fire pastor.
Thanks, George!

Thank you Joshua Cole for the enlightening sermon. As a spiritual father, you must be a well in which Christ can supply fresh and clean water to His flock. And it takes me to Psa 84:4-12. You are taken through the valley of Baca, valley of humility…to cry out for God to make you a well. Am blessed to hear you, Albeit from an old sermon.. Christ’s words are timeless. Shalom.
